"Following the original spirit of the Growing Space as a place for wealth redistribution for those who had no access to state support at the beginning of the lockdown in Rotterdam, 50% percent of the fee from the Unexpected Neighbours project will go to the Red Comunitaria Trans (Trans Community Network) of Bogota, Colombia. The pandemic has done nothing but accentuate wealth disparities and exclusion, deepening global inequality.

The Red Comunitaria Trans is a center for artistic, political, cultural and community thoughts and collective actions, which emerged as an initiative of Trans women sex workers from the Santa Fe neighborhood in Bogota in August 2012." Santiago Pinyol

Growing Space wenst Wielewaal

Proper Tease (Gepast Plagerijtje) - Eden Calgie
-----
Proper Tease - Eden Calgie
Proper Tease presents several transparent paintings which recreate the subtlety of finger marks on fogged-up glass. Traces of humanity. Just beyond reach.
The greenhouse itself is the inspiration for this work, because the greenhouse defines how and why the work exists.
The material choices acknowledge that the inhabited space has an important influence upon the artwork during its formation.
Proper Tease is an ode to the powerful personality of spaces that contain art.
---
When fools rush in and connect with the stars - Steven Maybury
(May 2020) In lockdown: there are no planes in the sky, there haven’t been for weeks. I’m standing under the skies my ancestors looked up at. My gaze is fixed downwards, towards the pavement.
Strangely, I get the feeling I’m discovering a new sky. My head down, it is as though I am an inexperienced explorer who has been launched into the flickering cosmos, reaching farther than anyone before me.
In this frictionless journey through the abrasive abyss, I am 7 billion years into a directionless past. I am standing in a time before the sun from our solar system came to be. I am standing on star dust, manufactured for me to walk among the stars. The litter nearby are the only things between the beginning of time and infinity above me.
ONKRUID - Christian Ovesen
KRUID: Kruid, plant
---
ONKRUID - Christian Ovesen
As populations grow and cities expand, green areas are being converted into properties, parking lots, luxury-condos, shopping malls and other profit forms. In the breaks between the constant flux of breaking down and building up, however, nature can find its way back in and dwell in these moments. In a symbiotic relation between roots and fungi, plants are able to exchange nutrients with each other, and in this way, they can adapt, even in places of de-struction. It is a form of communication based on sharing, where collaboration is the only way to survive.
ON- : A prefix meaning “not”
KRUID: herb, plant
ONKRUID/Not-plant or weed: a wild plant growing where it is not wanted and in competition with cultivated plants (Oxford Dictionary)
The Collective Loom - Theodora Kotsi-Felici
Theodora Kotsi-Felici developed with associate Professor Valeria Gazzola the research project “Social Interactions Beyond Consciousness” for the festival Charlois Speciaal. It concerns a series of experiments in which we investigated the effect of “social distancing” on the movement and empathy of people. The aim of the project is to demonstrate how visible and invisible phenomena can influence group dynamics.
As an extension of this research project, I developed “The Collective Loom Project” in which the data from the experiments above are processed. The project consists of a loom in which 4 to 14 people can simultaneously weave on the loom; the weavers will gradually influence the appearance of the fabric. With this refering to the complexity of human behavioral patterns and how people become interwoven in each other's processes.
The performance includes poems by Nilgün Marmara, Gülten Akın and Nazım Hikmet translated by the artists from Turkish to English. This work is an investigation into the possible significance of folkloric, imperial and shamanic traditions of Anatolian history in today’s society

Hereby, I intertwine memories into a physical form.
They are memories of a repeating action.
[Me and my sister as children, devoted to a playful interaction, weaving threads of wool and strings and objects into a net in our room. Conversing and playing, exchanging secrets, inventing and imagining - the net was a shelter for our imaginations, a space for connection.]
They are memories of the real-time physical action.
[The intuitive construction of this entanglement.]
They are the memories of fictional times that the net enables.
[While I weave, I think, I speak, I articulate and imagine].
A structure arises while a myriad of stories is being spoken into its midst.
[I wonder where their worlds get captured - in the lines of strings themselves, in the knots where they meet, in the paranodal spaces in between.]
---

CATS AND DOGS is a show for all the dogs and their walkers, the cats of Charlois, and anyone who knows a pet who loves to play. Old clothes that have been outgrow, damaged or no longer needed will be collected from the neighbourhood and transformed into pet toys to be given away free on Sunday 19th Juli between 14.00 - 18.00 to all nearby animals and their owners.
CATS AND DOGS is a collaboration between Sophie Bates, Larisa David, Honey Jones-Hughes and Lili Huston-Herterich.
Uuahib - Saynotosu
---
Uuahib - Saynotosu
Uuahib is an evolving work that explores the worlds created between the dynamics of culture, language, bodies, and narratives. Stemming from arbitrary symbols, mixed textiles, and plant mediums, an ambiguous body stretches from the tapestry, into soundscape and movement (live performance August 6) to give these in-between spaces a sense of realness.
Making of the soundscape: In September 2020, a group of six artists and musicians come together to translate the tapestry of beanstalks into a lingual composition, converting the perceived logographs into a narrative. In this edition of Uuahib, the audio piece is interpreted by four dancers to give the expressions of the narrative form and movement.
The Returnables - Matti Wim Havens
---
The Returnables - Matti Wim Havens
The Returnables are artworks made of items that will be returned to the stores from which they were purchased. Doing so addresses two concepts. First, our Western consumer culture, and the effects on the environment that such consumption entails. Secondly, it exploits stores’ return policies, undermining their main goal, profitability.
BRIJN BLOED/GEZWOLLEN PIJP - Kari Robertson
---
BRINE BLOOD/SWOLLEN PIPE - Kari Robertson
is a playful exploration of 'aquatic architecture' and water as liquid connectivity. Growing Space itself becomes a body of water; a sweating, enclosed pond composed of locally-collected rain water. A series of fountains suck, drink, pump, channel, funnel and spray back in a microcosm of the hydrologic cycle.
Water-based - Raluca Croitoru
---
Water-based - Raluca Croitoru
Water-based is an exhibition by Raluca Croitoru and includes two enlarged watercolours, digitally scanned and printed on fabric.
Raluca thinks through brush strokes and inkjet droplets about representation, materiality and letting go.
The exhibition becomes a temporary resting space for floating bodies on their journey towards an unarticulated destination.

We Find Each Other Under the Oak Tree - Bobby Sayers
One of the main reasons I left the town I grew up in and lived in other countries is because I gravitated to the places I felt more at home, in my case less a place and more a group of people, those in the arts. Within the arts, across the world, I have found more acceptance for the ways I am, the ways I wish to live my life, express myself creatively and be with others.
As someone from England, specifically a working class part of Essex, I have always struggled with the violence and aggression layered throughout my history and what I experienced in my town throughout my life. I felt pushed into a society of masculinity where I was forced to perform in ways that were unnatural to me, to be loud, to be aggressive and often to fight.
In the creation of this series of work I wanted to draw from something positive from my history, stories of societal or personal transformation that took place in Essex. This is when I discovered the Fairlop Oak, a tree said to be the biggest ever to exist in England. That brought people together for one day every year in celebration for over 200 years from 1700-1900, from all across England, creating a place of acceptance - where people could break free from normality and be themselves.
These artworks collage old images and motifs from working class histories and heraldry in Essex alongside my own poetry and illustrations. Bringing together thoughts and feelings around subjects of shame, self acceptance, toxic/healthy masculinity, sexuality and internalised homophobia.
